How to Use the Guide

There are two main components to Texas School Guide: the School Profiles and the Parent Action Guides. The School Profiles help you understand how local schools are performing, and the Parent Action Guides provide resources to guide your decisions regarding early childhood education, higher education, school choice and parent involvement.

Use the “Find a School” function to easily search schools by district area, distance, school type, grade level, CHILDREN AT RISK grade, or available school assets. You can also navigate the interactive map to find the high performing schools that are closest to you. On each individual school profile, CHILDREN AT RISK has provided a snapshot of school performance with the CHILDREN AT RISK Letter Grades, State Rankings, and the Performance Scale. Here’s how these scales work:

CHILDREN AT RISK Letter Grades

CHILDREN AT RISK has assigned each school a letter grade based on its comparative performance with other schools in the state. Schools are graded as an A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, or F.

CHILDREN AT RISK School Rankings:

CHILDREN AT RISK’s 2015 Public School Rankings ranked public schools across the state of Texas on a variety of indicators. Each school’s profile will include their ranking out of the total number of schools ranked for that grade level in the state.

  • State Ranking: Individual School Ranking / Total Schools Ranked for that Grade Level Across the State

The Performance Scale

To classify performance on the Report Card, statewide data was used to calculate percentile ranks for each indicator.

  • Above Average: The school’s indicator for that category scored in the top 25% statewide.
  • Average: The school’s indicator for that category scored in the middle 50% statewide.
  • Below Average: The school’s indicator for that category scored in the bottom 25% statewide.

Note: Any field labeled “NA” indicates that data was unavailable from the Texas Education Agency at the time of publication.

If you find that your school is not ranked or graded highly, we encourage you to visit the Parent Action Guides to understand your options. In some cases, you may find a charter school that better meets your needs, or you might find that you are eligible for a within district transfer. You might also decide that changing schools is not the best option for you and your child. Regardless of your decision, we hope that Texas School Guide can provide the resources and data you need along your journey!
