Transfer Options Within Fort Worth ISD

Although a student’s neighborhood school is determined by their home address, in Fort Worth ISD, students can apply for transfer requests to other schools that better match their needs or interests if they meet the requirements listed below. All transfer requests are subject to availability and application deadlines. You should contact the district directly to learn about the most current deadlines.

It is also important to note that the transfer options listed in this section do not refer to the magnet program options, which are listed in the next section. The three main ways to transfer from one school to another school in Fort Worth ISD are:

  1. Elementary Student Transfers: Initiated because of student/family needs
  2. Secondary Student Transfers: Initiated because of student/family needs
  3. Public Education Grant (PEG) School Transfers: Initiated because of the school’s performance

Elementary and Secondary Student Transfers

The transfer process in Fort Worth ISD differs depending on whether the student is in elementary or secondary school (middle and high school). All transfers are subject to approval and space availability. Elementary school transfers are handled by the individual school principals, but secondary school transfers are coordinated by the Central Office Staff. For current information regarding transfer policies, contact:

Elementary School Leadership - 817-814-2310
Secondary School Leadership - 817-814-2340

Students who transfer from one school to another school do not become part of the new school’s feeder pattern. This will impact students when they are transitioning from elementary to middle school or middle school to high school because students will return to their attendance zone feeder school (neighborhood school) after 5th or 8th grade. At the time of this publication, the typical transfer window for elementary and secondary school transfers is the first three weeks of March.

TRANSFER TYPE REASON FOR TRANSFER PROCESS

  • To attend a school with a program not offered in the home school
  • Contact the new school to file the transfer request and determine space availability
  • The new school’s principal either accepts or denies the transfer request. The principal signs the transfer form if accepted
  • Complete paperwork and have the transfer form signed by the neighborhood school for withdrawal and re-enrollment
Secondary student transfer

PEG Transfers

Parents should also be advised that students are eligible to transfer if they are attending a Public Education Grant (PEG) designated school. PEG schools are low-performing schools where 50% or more of the students did not pass any of the TAKS/STAAR subjects in any two of the preceding three years, or schools that were recently rated Academically Unacceptable by the Texas Education Agency. Every year, the state provides a list of PEG-designated schools to districts, and districts must notify the parents of a student assigned to a PEG-designated school of the school’s PEG status by February 1st. To locate a list of PEG designated schools, and to learn more about this program, visit the Texas Education Agency’s website at ritter.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/peg_faq.html.
